In th Summer of 1972, the 82nd Airborne called off all leaves and had all personnel report. We were outfitted with combat gear but also something else; ammo to go with our M-16's. At first, I thought nothing of this drill, since the 82nd held these preparedness drills from time to time to see our reaction time. We were trucked to Pope Air Field and in front of us, was a whole fleet of taxxing C-141's and C-130's along with ample supplies of light weapons. At that point, it seemed a bit more than just a drill, so I asked my LT what was going on. He replied that we were going to be dropped in Israel's Negev Desert and to expect heavy combat. Being a dumbass 19 yo, I saluted my LT and went back to my platoon to double check their gear. After about 5 hours, it was called off and we returned to our barracks. My guess is that President Nixon had at first decided to support Israel's planned aggression against her neighbors, but his paranoia kicked in and he realized that having American kids coming home in caskets from a war started by Israel wasn't a good election ploy, so he told Israel to chill out.
